Reinvigorating the Social Contract in the 21st Century: A Teach-In
On Tuesday, November 1, 2005, the Department of Social Work at Cal State Sacramento sponsored an event entitled Reinvigorating The Social Contract in the 21st Century: A Teach-In. The event examined the limited ability of the federal government in responding to Hurricane Katrina as a perfect example of the failure of the social contract to provide for the needs of the American people. The Teach-In linked the consequences of this failure to the attacks on Social Security and the social contract. Speakers at the event included Wendy Rae Hill, Director of Government Relations and Political Affairs, National Association of Social Workers; Benee Hopson, Liaison, California Teachers Association and High School History Teacher; Larry Thomas, Regional African American Initiative Representative, AARP; and Milena Nelson, founding member, Students for Social Security. Carroll L. Estes, PhD, of Concerned Scientists in Aging gave the keynote address.

Rally at San Jose State Rally
The rally was organized by SSS coalition member, and founder of American's Uniting America. Conress woman Zoe Lofgren spoke to the small crowd of die-hard students through downpours and thunder. Lots of materials were handed out while the rain receded before the event, and several students asked the congresswomen questions of particular interest to students. The Congress woman was also recently involved in an event in Los Angeles with over 2,000 in attendance. We appreciated her contribution to our efforts and the growing awareness on the San Jose State campus. For more about how to set up events on campuses, we will soon be posting this topic in our Organizer's Toolkit. Until then, please contact us or Alessandra Harris of Americans Uniting America.

Democratic Women's Forum, Social Security Education and Advocacy Forum
About 60 people were in attendance at this very well organized meeting in downtown San Francisco on Saturday April 9th. Dr. Carroll Estes (Concerned Scientists in Aging) and Brooke Hollister (Students for Social Security) spoke and sat on the panel with Bryon MacDonald (World Institute on Disabilities) and Betty Bernstein Retired Field Representative, Social Security Administration). The event also consisted of break out groups: Speaker's Training, How to organize events, Coalition Building and How to Get press for your cause. We recommend this structure to others as a way not only to inform, but to involve the community. We learned a lot from our participants, and will be posting summaries of the breakout groups on the Organizer's Toolkit page. Alessandra Harris, member of Students for Social Security and founder of American's Uniting America also attended a CARA town hall meeting in Alameda on Saturday, and reported lots of support and a few new upcoming events for the calendar. Thanks Alessandra!

Action against Governor Schwarzenegger at the Ritz in San Francisco
SSS, CSA and many other organizations have created a joint effort in San Francisco to stop the privatization of Social Security and the State Pension Program, as is being proposed by Gov. Schwarzenegger. The action at the risk was an incredible success, with nurses, firemen, off-duty policemen, teachers, and others joined together in opposition to Governor Schwarzeneggers harmful politics. His attempt to privatize the state pension system and support of the privatization of Social Security are clearly unpopular... especially in San Francisco!

Day of Action Against Charles Schwab
Members of the Hands Off Social Security Coalition in San Francisco participated in the March 31st Day of Action against Charles Schwab. Charles Schwab is one of the major contributors to campaigns to privatize Social Security. Actions were held on a national level, telling Schwab to pull out of the push to privatize Social Security. Hand's Off Social Security Coalition members were happy to join California Labor groups in a unified message against privatizing Social Security and California's Pension system. More than 2,500 people were reported to be in attendance. Local media agencies did a poor job of covering the event. See the San Francisco Chronicle Article announcing the event, and the report of the event HERE. The second article largely under-reported the nember of people present and minimized the action to "people holding signs and beating drums." Write the Chronicle with your opinion of their reporting of the event HERE. For more information about the event, visit the AFL-CIO website.

Congress woman Susan Davis' Town hall meeting in SD
Brooke Hollister attended and spoke about Students for Social Security and Concerned Scientists in Aging at Congress woman Susan Davis' town hall meeting on Social Security in San Diego, California on March 26th. There were about 100 people in attendance, and the discussions were heated! I enjoyed talking to constituants about how we can view Social Security as a people's issue and not a political one. The people need to look at all the facts they possibly can in order to make their own decision about whether Social Security is really in crisis, and how we can fix it, devoid of political orientation, influences, arguments, and ideologies
- National Committe to Preserve Social Security and Medicare's Advocacy Forum
Carroll Estes, a member of the board for NCPSSM spoke at an Advocacy Forum in San Francisco. NCPSSM has been very generous in their support of both organizations, and their donations of materials for events. - Gray Panther's Protest
CSA and SSS were invited to a Gray Panther's rally in front of California Senator Barbara Feinstein's office. The rally thanked Senator Feinstein for her stance against privatization, and included many speakers, including Brooke Hollister (SSS), Mauro Hernandez (SSS) and Carroll Estes (SSS and CSA). The rally provided a great opportunity to reach downtown foot traffic, and to forge more relationships in a coalition we are now involved in: "Hands Off Social Security." Brooke Hollister was interviewed by KPFA, a local radio station, and a Daily Califnornian reporter. Read the Story.

Nancy Pelosi's Town Hall Meeting
Students for Social Security, Concerned Scientists in Aging, and Nurses for Social Security all made a presence at Nancy Pelosi's town hall meeting in San Francisco on February 23rd, 2005. Dr. Carroll Estes, Co-founder of all three organizations was an expert speaker on Congress woman Pelosi's panel. We had a table of handouts, and all of them were gone by the end of the meeting. Paloma Sales, a sociology student at UCSF was interviewed by channel 5 news, to air on the 6:00 news tonight. Several pictures were taken of our group, and both Brooke Hollister (UCSF) and Lauren Patti (UC Berkeley) were called on to ask Congress woman Pelosi questions. Several other media opportunities arose, and many new connections were forged with other organizations.

Senator Boxer Speaks Out on Social Security
Friday February 11th, both Concerned Scientists in Aging and Students for Social Security attended a press conference held by Senator Barbara Boxer. Senator Boxer's speech was right on point, and the event was a great opportunity for both CSA and SSS to make connections and appear in the media. Brooke Hollister of Students for Social Security was interviewed for the San Francisco Chronicle and KQED, and Dr. Carroll Estes of Concerned Scientists in Aging was also interviewed by KQED. We had signs which read "Concerned Scientists in Aging," and "Students for Social Security," and had several pictures taken of our lively group.
