We need your help! Now is the time for us to step up our grassroots lobbying
efforts on Social Security. Set up a meeting with your (organization, local group,
chapter) and your Member of Congress today.
1) Call your district office and schedule meeting with your
Member of Congress. Tell them that you are calling from Students for Social Security
and a small group of your member would like to discuss Social
Security.
2) Ask to meet with the Congressperson (Monday and Friday are usually best).
If he or she is not available ask to meet with their top aide.
3) Prepare for your meeting. Be sure to ask what the member's position is
on privatization. Don't let them get away with saying they are waiting for
a plan or legislation. Ask them their position on the Republican/Bush Privatization
Bill or GROW accounts - a private accounts bill now in Congress.
4) Report back. After your meeting email admin@studentsforsocialsecurity.org and let us know what the Congressperson said.
If you have any questions, please contact admin@studentsforsocialsecurity.org.

Dear [Leader/Member's Name],
For the past several months, President Bush has traveled the country trying to
sell his Social Security privatization plan but the American people aren't buying
it. In a desperate attempt to re-package the Bush plan, Republicans in Congress
have introduced their own version of President Bush's risky privatization plan,
GROW accounts, claiming it is an effort to protect the trust fund. In reality,
this legislation consists of phony budget gimmicks that do not stop the government
from borrowing the Social Security surplus or do anything to protect future Social
Security benefits.
Inside this new packaging lie the same bad ideas that formed the core of the
Bush plan. The bill has the same problems as the original Bush plan 1) It diverts
from the trust fund into risky accounts, which is privatization 2) It greatly
increases the budget deficit and our national debt and 3) It cuts guaranteed
Social Security benefits.
